Quick answers
How do I calculate what an appliance costs to run?
Divide the watts by 1,000 to get kilowatts, multiply by the hours used to get kWh, then multiply by your electricity rate. A 1,500 W heater for 8 hours at $0.175 per kWh uses 12 kWh and costs $2.10.
Where do I find my electricity rate?
Look at your bill. Divide the total electricity charge by the kWh used, or find the “price per kWh” line. The calculator starts with an average rate for your region that you can overwrite.
Where do I find an appliance's wattage?
Check the label on the back or bottom, or the manual. If it only shows amps and volts, multiply them to get watts. Or pick the appliance from the list and use the typical value.
Are the results exact?
They are estimates. Real appliances cycle, wear and run at different settings. For exact numbers, use a plug-in energy monitor and enter the reading in the calculator.
